Zepbound (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which works by mimicking the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). This hormone helps regulate blood sugar, appetite, and digestion. Here’s how it helps with weight loss:
Appetite suppression: Semaglutide works in the brain to help reduce hunger, making it easier to eat less.
Slower gastric emptying: It slows down the emptying of the stomach, which makes you feel fuller longer.
Increased insulin secretion: It increases insulin release in response to meals, helping to regulate blood sugar levels.
While Zepbound is effective for weight loss, it can have side effects, especially when you first start using it. Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Stomach pain
- Decreased appetite(which is often a desired effect for weight loss)
Serious side effects (though rare) can include:
- Pancreatitis(inflammation of the pancreas)
- Kidney problems (especially in those who are dehydrated due to vomiting or diarrhea)
- Thyroid tumors (this is a concern based on animal studies, and patients with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer should not use semaglutide)
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if you're also taking medications for diabetes.
Before using Zepbound, make sure to:
- Talk to your doctor: Especially if you have a history of pancreatitis, thyroid cancer, or kidney problems.
- Discuss other medications:Zepbound can interact with other medications, particularly those for diabetes, and your doctor may adjust your doses accordingly.
- Start gradually:As Zepbound can cause gastrointestinal side effects, your doctor may recommend starting at a lower dose and gradually increasing it to minimize discomfort.
Zepbound (semaglutide) for weight loss is administered via aweekly subcutaneous injection(under the skin), similar toWegovyorOzempic. The recommended starting dose and the way it's used are very similar across the various brands of semaglutide.
Prepare the Pen
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Check the pen to make sure it's not expired and the solution is clear (it should not be cloudy or have particles).
- Remove the cap from the pen and then attach a new needle by screwing it onto the pen.
Prime the Pen
- Hold the pen with the needle pointing upwards.
- Dial the dose selector to the lowest dose (this may be 0.25 mg if you're starting).
- Press the button to ensure a drop of medication appears at the needle tip. This primes the pen and removes any air bubbles.
Set the Dose
- Turn the dose selector to the prescribed dose as directed by your doctor. Most people start at 0.25 mg once a week, then increase the dose gradually (usually to 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and then 2.4 mg over time, depending on your weight loss goals and how your body responds).
Choose the Injection Site
- Zepbound can be injected into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. Rotate the sites each week to avoid irritation at the injection site.
- Avoid injecting near your navel (the area within 2 inches of your belly button).
Administer the Injection
- Pinch the skin around the injection site.
- Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle into the pinched skin.
- Press the injection button to deliver the medication.
- Hold the button down for about 5-10 seconds to ensure the full dose is administered.
- Release the pinched skin and remove the needle from your skin.
Dispose of the Needle
- Dispose of the needle in a sharps container. Do not throw it in the trash.
- Recap the pen and store it as instructed, usually in the refrigerator.
