Ozempic mimics GLP-1, a hormone that plays several key roles in regulating metabolism and appetite:

Appetite Suppression: Ozempic helps reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness (satiety). It works by slowing down gastric emptying, meaning food stays in the stomach longer, which helps you feel fuller for longer periods. This leads to reduced calorie intake and helps with weight loss.

Improved Insulin Sensitivity: In people with type 2 diabetes, Ozempic improves insulin sensitivity, which helps lower blood sugar levels. Better insulin control is associated with reduced fat storage and improved energy balance, which can support weight loss.

Reduced Caloric Intake: Ozempic affects brain signals related to hunger, reducing the desire to eat and leading to a natural reduction in caloric intake. This is one of the main reasons why people using Ozempic tend to lose weight.

Fat Loss: Studies have shown that Ozempic may help the body use fat more effectively, potentially leading to fat loss rather than muscle loss.

• With Obesity or Overweight (Non-Diabetic Individuals): In clinical trials, semaglutide 2.4 mg (brand name Wegovy, a higher dose formulation of semaglutide) has led to an average weight loss of 15-20% of body weight over the course of 6–12 months. Semaglutide for Type 2 Diabetes: In people with type 2 diabetes, Ozempic (semaglutide) has also shown impressive weight loss results, in addition to its blood sugar-lowering effects:

• Participants taking Ozempic for diabetes management lost an average of 5-10% of their body weight, depending on the dosage (0.5 mg or 1 mg). While the primary goal of Ozempic in diabetes treatment is blood sugar control, weight loss is a significant secondary benefit.

Prepare Your Ozempic Pen

• Check the pen: Make sure the pen is not expired and that it’s stored correctly (refrigerated until the first use, then can be kept at room temperature for up to 56 days).
• Inspect the solution: Before injecting, make sure the Ozempic solution is clear and colorless. If the solution is cloudy, discolored, or contains particles, do not use it. Use a new pen.
• Wash your hands thoroughly to reduce the risk of infection.

Attach the Needle

• Remove the cap from the Ozempic pen.
• Choose a new needle from the package and remove the protective outer cap.
• Screw the needle onto the pen by twisting it until it is secure.

Prime the Pen

Priming the pen ensures that the needle is ready to deliver the correct dose and prevents air bubbles.

• Hold the pen with the needle pointing up.
• Turn the dose selector to 0.25 mg (the starting dose for Ozempic).
• Press the injection button fully until you see a drop of medication at the tip of the needle. This means the pen is primed and ready to use.
• If no drop appears, repeat the priming process until a drop is visible.

Choose the Injection Site

• Ozempic can be injected into:

1. Thigh (front or outer part)
2. Abdomen (avoiding a 2-inch area around the navel)
3. Upper arm (back of the upper arm)

• Rotate between different sites each week to avoid irritation.
• Choose a site with enough fatty tissue to ensure proper absorption.

Set the Dose

• Turn the dose selector to the prescribed dose. Most commonly, people start at 0.25 mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks, then increase to 0.5 mg, and eventually move up to 1 mg and higher if needed.
• Make sure the dose selected matches the dose your doctor prescribed.

Inject the Medication

• Pinch the skin around the injection site to lift it up slightly.
• Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle (straight in) into the pinched skin. Use a firm, quick motion.
• Press the injection button fully to deliver the medication. Hold the button in until the dose counter reaches 0 to ensure the full dose is delivered.
• Release the pinch on your skin and remove the needle from your skin.

Dispose of the Needle and Cap

• After the injection, remove the needle by unscrewing it from the pen and disposing of it in a sharps container. Do not throw used needles into the trash.
• Place the cap back on the pen to protect it and store it as directed.

Record Your Injection

• Note the date of your injection and the site where you injected to help you keep track for future doses.
